This lecture is sponsored by ENCORE Learn as its Annual Signature Event, and is presented free to everyone.

The fall of the Berlin Wall did not come about by itself. It was the result of sacrifice, courage and determination by the citizens of then Communist East Germany  a satellite state of the former Soviet Union. ENCORE has invited a person from that former country who lived there his entire life and was, as participant and direct observer, an eye-witness to history. His presentation will elaborate on how the Wall fell as a result of a mistake by a top functionary of that country.

Herr Manfred Riedel will take us through the demonstrations for a more humane government to the moment on November 9, 1989 when the Wall fell. From that point forward, he’ll tell us how East Germany was reintegrated into the Germany of today, the currency reform to bring East Germans into the Western economy, and restoration of individual property rights after the general dispossession ordered by the communists from the end of WWII.
