Cascadia Chamber Opera Welcomes Ping & Woof Opera for Menotti’s Haunting piece called
The Medium
Just in time for the Halloween season, Cascadia Chamber Opera welcomes Ping & Woof Opera to Astoria for a performance of Gian Carlo Menotti’s gripping supernatural opera The Medium on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.
Part psychological drama, part ghost story, The Medium follows Madame Flora, a fraudulent spiritual medium whose staged séances take a terrifying turn when she experiences something she cannot explain. What begins as deception quickly becomes a story of fear, doubt, guilt, and the unsettling question at the heart of every good ghost story: what if something really is there?
And for anyone who thinks opera means a long evening in a foreign language—this one may be a surprise. The Medium is sung in English and runs approximately 1½ hours, including an intermission, making it an especially accessible introduction to opera as live theater.
The performance features several artists who have become recent favorites with Cascadia Chamber Opera audiences, including Zachary Lenox, Jocelyn Claire Thomas, and Aaron Lange, along with exciting new voices joining the CCO community, including Alexis Hamilton.
Audiences are invited to make an evening of it. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., with pre-show entertainment and an informal pre-show discussion about the opera, offering some background on Menotti, the story, and what to listen and watch for during the performance. No opera expertise required—just come curious.
Written by Italian-American composer and librettist Gian Carlo Menotti, The Medium is an intimate theatrical work in which the music and drama are inseparable. Its small-scale setting brings the singers and audience unusually close to the action, allowing the tension to build almost like a live psychological thriller.
The performance begins at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, October 24, in Astoria. Admission is Pay What You Can, with a suggested donation of $20, part of Cascadia Chamber Opera’s commitment to making professional vocal performance accessible to the community.
